Many people choose this area to visit or buy a property as it still has that special Spanish feel to it. There are a good number of bars, restaurants and shops that are open all year around making it a perfect place to buy a permanent residence or winter holiday home. Throughout the year, every Wednesday, you will find the colourful and busy La Mata street market - “mercadillo” in Spanish!. To the North of the town the dunes continue to stretch all the way up to the next town called Guardamar.   Something quite special about Torrevieja and La Mata are their Lagunas (Salt Lakes) and Natural Park. A protected area, this covers 3,700 Ha and is beautiful. It´s environmental values have been globally recognized since 1972 with the RAMSAR Convention. A landscape of rear beauty, Torreviejas Salt lake is pink and has its own salt mine, with the La Mata Salt Lake being green in colour and is where the park’s Interpretation Centre is located. As well as being a protected natural environment, these lakes provide a special micro-climate to the area, which makes it an important and highly desired tourist and health destination. For those that love to take a relaxing walk or cycle in the fresh air, surrounded by nature, this reserve is the most tranquil place you will find so close to the coast. You can visit the parks information center and discover the various possibilities this park has to offer – without doubt, it is the ideal place for those who love nature tourism.
